Who Are Lions?

Lions are proud members of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organization. In fact, with 1.35 million members throughout 45,000 clubs in 206 countries and geographic areas, Lions members are all around us. They are volunteers with an inherent mission of humanitarianism and community service.

As part of their focus on sight saving or restoring projects, Lions help conduct vision screenings and distribute much needed medicines. They collect and recycle old eye glasses for reuse. They also raise awareness of disease prevention and treatment and help equip medical facilities with the tools they need to promote visual health.Founded in 1917 and best known for their mission to eradicate blindness, Lions are also integrally involved in projects geared to preserving the environment, feeding the hungry, and aiding those in need throughout our communities.

According to Lions Clubs International, LCIF, the Lions Clubs International Foundation has provided over 700 million dollars in grants since 1968 for humanitarian projects throughout the world.

When you see that Lions emblem on the side of the road when you enter a new town or community, you can be sure that Lions are actively helping to make the community a better place.

In our local communities, the Lions Clubs of Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, and Queens have teamed up to help support the work of this great Eye Bank. They volunteer to transport the Gift of Sight to and from local hospitals, airports, and/or surgery centers. They man tables at health fairs and community events to spread the word about the need for eye donation. And they sponsor events to raise funds to help to provide the Lions Eye Bank with the state-of-the-art equipment necessary in today’s healthcare environment.
