Martin Efron, Retired Principal and Volunteer
(Newsday February 15, 2001)
Martin Efron, an administrator from the Brentwood School District who retired nine years ago and then became very active in the eye bank run by the Long Island Lions Club, died of a heart attack Sunday at his West Islip home. He was 63.
Efron joined the Brentwood district as a social studies teacher in 1961 and became principal of Brentwood Junior High School in 1970. In 1980 he became principal of the district's night school and continuing education programs, a post he held until he retired. He was also a president of the district's principals and administrators association.
A member of the Lions Club for most of his adult life, Efron began working for the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island as a transporter of corneas shortly after retiring. He was elected to the group's board of directors in 1995 and in 1999 became chairman of the board, a position he held when he died.
Efron transported more than 100 corneas for transplants while he was a courier. He also donated his own corneas upon his death, according to his family.
A graduate of Babylon High School, Efron attended the State University at Oneonta, served in the Navy from 1955 to 1957 and returned to graduate. He also received a master's degree in education from Queens College.
His survivors include his wife, eva, a son, David, and three daughters, Susan, Nancy and Dawn.
Efron's funeral was yesterday at Temple Beth David in Commack; burial followed at New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon.

Marty believes that the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens is the one Lions project that all three Districts, 20k-1, 20k-2 and 20-S come together and have direct input and control. One of his projects as chairman is to expand our roll in the education of people regarding organ and tissue donation. To that end, working with the Eye Bank staff, he is developing a program of going into the schools to make young people aware of the role that they can play in the gift of sight.
