Samuel Packer, M.D.

Executive Chairman for the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island
Samuel Packer, M.D. has been the Executive Chairman of the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island at North Shore University Hospital since its inception in 1986. He was instrumental in establishing the Eye Bank at North Shore University Hospital.
Dr. Packer was educated in the public schools of New York. He attended Public School 1, 177 and 238, and the Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn. His college education was obtained at Ohio University and New York University. He received his medical education at University of Louisville and the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center. His internship was served at King County Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., and then he held a residency at Yale-New haven Hospital. He has had fellowship training at Yale-New Haven Hospital and with Dr. Robert Ellsworth in Ophthalmic Oncology.
After his medical training he served in the U.S. Navy at St. Albans Naval Hospital.
In 1973 he started his ophthalmology practice in Manhasset, N.Y., and has remained in practice since then. In 1984 he was appointed Chief of the Division of Ophthalmology at North Shore University Hospital, and in 1989 was named Chairman of the newly created Department of Ophthalmology. He rose through the academic ranks of Cornell University Medical College and was appointed Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology in 1988. He also has a joint appointment in Radiology where he holds the rank of Associated Professor of Clinical Radiology.
His research interests have centered on the use of radioactive materials to diagnose and treat cancers of the eye. He began as a research collaborator at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, Long Island, and rose to the rank of Scientist in 1983. With his colleagues in the Department of Medicine and Chemistry he has been awarded over five million dollars in research grants. His major contribution has been to pioneer the use of low energy radioactive sources to treat melanoma of the eye. This followed his earlier research that defined the use of radioactive materials to diagnose malignancy of the eye. Most recently Dr. Packer has devoted much of his academic time to medical ethics and has written articles, chapters and has been a invited lecturer at many of the major universities in the United States. Dr. Packer has written over 60 articles, 33 abstracts, 5 reviews and 16 chapters.
In addition to his commitment to education and research, Dr. Packer also is involved in many medical societies and has assumed a leadership role in the following: Long Island Ophthalmologic Society (President - 1991), Nassau County Medical Society ( Vice President - 1993), New York State Ophthalmological Society (Board of Directors - 1991), American Academy of Ophthalmology (Ethics Committee - 1990 to present, Alternate Councilor - 1993), Nassau Academy of Medicine (Chairman, Section of Ophthalmology - 1988, Board of Directors - 1992 to present), Medical Society of the State of New York (Scientific Advisor, Ethics Committee).
He has received several awards for his efforts noted above. These include The Honors Day Certificate for State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center - 1966, the Richard C. Troutman, M.D. Master Teacher Award from State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center - 1991, and the Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology - 1991.
Finally, what balances all of these efforts is his family life. He lives with his wife Donna and three children, Adam, Marisa, and Andrew. He also has a 30 year old daughter, Heidi. He has also become a new grandfather! The family activities include sailing, skiing and tennis. And when Dr. Packer finds a free moment he says that there is nothing better than a good book.

Henry D. Perry, M.D.
Medical Director
Lions Eye Bank for Long Island

Henry D. Perry, M.D. has been the Medical Director of the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island at North Shore University Hospital since its inception in 1986. Dr. Perry was one of the main individuals who was responsible for establishing the Eye Bank at North Shore University Hospital. His dedication to our Eye Bank has made us a proud member of the sight restoration community.
Dr. Perry received his undergraduate degree from Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York and his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, Ohio. He continued his training through an internship and residency at the Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow, New York. He received special training at the University of Pennsylvania Schice Eye Institute and later completed a fellowship in Ophthalmic Pathology at the Armed Forces institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C.. He further completed fellowships in Cornea Research and Cornea Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard University, in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr. Perry served for two years as major and Chief of Ophthalmology in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at the Walson Army Hospital at Fort Dix New Jersey.
As a board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Perry hold several academic appointments including Director of Research Pathology Laboratories of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the New York Medical College, Physician-In-Charge of Cornea Service of North Shore University Hospital, Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology of Cornell University Medical College, Medical Director of the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island at North Shore University Hospital, and Director of Cornea Service of the Nassau County Medical Center.
Dr. Perry is a nationally recognized expert in diseases and surgery of the cornea and corneal pathology. He has published over 120 articles, eight chapters and two books on those subjects. He is a member and past officer of many professional societies, including: the American Medical Association, the New York State Medical Society, the Nassau County Medical Society, American College of Surgeons, the Kerato-Refractive Society, the Long Island Ophthalmology Society and the Alumni Association of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.

Kenneth Manger, BA, CEBT
Technical Supervisor / Interim Executive Director
Ken Manger, the Eye Bank's Technical Supervisor has been with the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island since October 1995. Mr. Manger has received his B.A. degree in Biology from Columbia University, NY. In addition to his degree Mr. Manger is a Certified Eye Bank Technician and member of the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island Board of Directors. He is responsible for the supervision and training of our on-call Eye Bank Technicians as well as the maintenance of the Eye Bank Laboratory. He has been the driving force behind the Eye Bank's high standards and quality control. Mr. Manger has been a key person who has kept our Eye Bank an EBAA Accredited Member and has helped us pass our FDA, and NY State Department of Health inspections.
Mr. Manger's is the 2001 Co-Recipient of the prestigious, Sons of Italy, "Banko Award" given for his dedication to the Gift of Sight Program.
Ken's dedication and high ethical standards to our Eye Bank have made us a proud quality-focused organization. Because of his dedication, Ken is the recent recipient of the Lions Eye Bank "Knight's of the Blind Award" .

Rochelle Goring, BA , CEBT
Eye Bank Technician
Rochelle Goring joined the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island in May, 2007. Her experience as a Unit Clerk at Syosset Hospital along with her ability to multitask has made her transition into eye banking a positive one. In 2006, Ms. Goring earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Rochelle brings to our Eye Bank tremendous enthusiasm and dedication toward helping those afflicted with corneal blindness. Rochelle's ability to get the job done has already earned her respect from our corneal transplant surgeons and Lions Club members. Rochelle became a Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) in November 2007 after passing the rigorous examination offered by the Eye Bank Association of America. Congratulations Rochelle!

Medical Secretary
Annette Jones has been the eye bank medical secretary since June of 2000. She brings to our eye bank and the North Shore/LIJ Health System, her extensive computer and secretarial skills. She has been instrumental in developing the eye bank's computerized billing system. Annette's job functions include, billing, auditing, scheduling corneal transplants surgeries as well as importing corneal tissue when necessary. Annette has received her Bachelor's of Science Degree in Information Systems Management from York College, the City University of New York.
Annette's friendly demeanor makes for a strong relationship between our eye bank, our transplant surgeons, our donor facilities and the Lions membership.
