Our modern Eye Bank Laboratory is currently located at North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, NY in the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. The eye bank laboratory was renamed as the Martin G. Efron Lions Eye Bank Laboratory on March 15, 2004 in memory of our past Chairman, Lion Marty Efron. We are a fully accredited Eye Bank meeting the EBAA's highest category for accreditation. We are subject to FDA, as well as New York State Department of Health site Inspections.
Much of the modern equipment used by our Eye Bank Technicians has been purchased by our local Lions Clubs throughout Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens Counties.
We are truly grateful for the tremendous support that our local Lions Clubs have given to their Eye Bank. Without their help our mission to restore sight to those in need would be that much more difficult.
The Laboratory is maintained by our Technical Supervisor - Kenneth Manger, B.A. CEBT. The "Lab" is where our Eye Bank Technicians come to bring the consented recovered donor corneas for processing. Each cornea must undergo a thorough microscopic inspection by a Certified Eye Bank Technician. Using sophisticated equipment such as a Slit Lamp, Specular Microscope and Endothelial Cell Counter the technician must rate the cornea suitable for transplant or not suitable for transplant. If there is any doubt as to the suitability of the tissue the Technician will contact our Medical Director, Henry D. Perry, M.D. for final clearance. All suitable donor corneal tissue must also meet the EBAA, FDA and NYDOH standards for infectious disease screening. This includes a review of the donor's medical record, a physical examination of the donor prior to recovery, a medical/social history obtained from the donor's next-of-kin and a complete blood screening test for HIV 1&2, HTLV-1&2, Syphilis as well as Hepatitis B and C . These tests help prevent the spread of communicable disease through transplantation. The Eye Bank will obtain all donor medical records including autopsy reports prior to the release of any donor eye tissue.
Our goal is to restore the sight of those who are visually impaired while protecting the health of the general public through proper use of the corneal tissue. We fully respect and honor our donors and our donor families. Without such a willingness to give the gift of sight so others could see, transplantation would never occur.
